Our lifestyle has intertwined with technology and today,
we can’t separate the two from each other. With so many digital gadgets around
us, it is extremely hard for us to avoid or stop the use of the same. Computervision syndrome (CVS) is the condition in which one experiences strain on the
eyes due to prolonged use of digital devices like computer screens, laptops,
mobile phones etc. Which is why it is also known as digital eye strain. This
leads to eye redness, dry eyes, headaches, blurry vision, double vision and
neck and shoulder pain. Here are some ways to avoid and prevent this condition
–
1. Visit your
Optometrist Regularly
Go for regular eye check-ups and share your eye-related discomfort
with your doctor. Use computer eyeglasses with AR coatings if you work a lot
with digital screens. Nowadays, many prescription eyeglasses also come with the
same coating to provide wider viewing angle and comfort of vision.
2. Maintain a Good
Posture
Set a reminder to correct your posture every 15 mins.
Make sure your laptop or computer is at least a hand away from your eyes at
about 20 to 28 inches. Anything under 20 inches is too close for the eyes and
can lead to strain. Make sure your neck and shoulders are not drooping and are
aligned to a considerate level of your laptop/computer screen. Your screen must
be at a 20-degree angle from the eyes.
3. Follow the
20-20-20 Rule
This is a recommended exercise for people who sit in
front of screens for long hours at a stretch. Look away from your digital
screens every 20 mins for about 20 seconds. Stare at something 20 feet away and
blink often. In case of dry eyes, consult your doctor and use eye drops.
4. Adjust Your Work-Seat
& Digital-Screen Properly
Adjust your work-seat in a way that your feet touch the
floor flat. Use an anti-glare screen shield or blue light filter for PC to
avoid prolonged encounters with bright reflections. Balance the screen
brightness and contrast levels with your surroundings. Try and sit
perpendicular to bright light sources like windows.
